3 Secrets to Less Oily Hair

Featured

I don’t know about you, but I hate washing my hair. Heck, I hate showering. It seems like such a waste of time (my boyfriend is shaking his head at me as I write this. Personal hygiene can sometimes be a struggle for me).

But I do know I’m not the only one because almost everyday someone sits in my chair and apologizes for their oily hair. So first of all, know it doesn’t bother me. Know you are welcome in my chair with any kind of hair. Secondly, I wanna give you the goods on how to help combat the oiliness.

Here are 3 secrets to Less Oily Hair

Boar bristle brushes in action!

1. Use a boar bristle brush

Did you know your scalp’s oils are the best conditioner? Often they get stuck at the roots of our hair causing it to appear ‘greasy.’ Using a boar bristle brush will drag those oils down to your ends and nourish your hair while also distributing the oils more evenly leaving less ‘grease” at your roots.

When I first learned this trick I was sceptical (you guys know how sceptical I am of everything at first) but every night before bed I brush my hair with a boar bristle and it works! I started being able to skip one day of washing, and now two.

2. Stop touching your hair

Your hands have oils on them and touching your hair through out the day will result is extra oils.  Just like you wouldn’t put a hair oil at the roots of your hair, try to resist touching your hair or running your hands through the top of you hair. If you must play with your hair and touch it, try to only touch the end.

This is especially important for all you fine hair gals out there. We don’t have as thick or as porous strands as our thick haired friends, so our hair cant absorb as much of the oils and gets oilier quicker.

So keep your hands clear of your beautiful locks.

3. Wash your hair less.

Over cleansing your hair can result in your oil glands over producing. Especially if you are using poor quality shampoo and conditioner. There is a popular drug store dandruff shampoo out there that actually burns the top layer of your scalp off to rid of the flakey skin. Although it appears to solve your dry scalp issue, your oil glands go crazy and start over producing oils to repair and protect your precious scalp because of the top layer missing. Its easy to get dependent on this kind of shampoo! So to get off of it, your dry scalp/dandruff actually has to get worse before it can get better.

Most professional shampoos are gentle enough for daily use, but I would still encourage you to try to go a day or two between. Its gonna take an adjustment period, but if you invest in a boar bristle brush as well, that is gonna ease a lot of the adjustment period. Your scalp is getting used to its new routine. Once it realizes that it doesn’t need to produce as much oil (since its not getting washed away as often) it will slow down.

Patience is important through this whole thing, but I promise its worth it. Your hair will end up healthier and shinier.

If going longer between shampoos isn’t for you, theres always dry shampoo that will absorb the oils (the only down side is your ends just wont get that goodness from those natural oils) and leave your hair feeling fresh without having to wash it.

Let me know what you think.
