I almost didn’t write this post.
Because I was still spiraling about a $10 price increase.
Yes, really. Ten. Dollars.
I remember the day I raised my prices by $10. I felt sick to my stomach. And not long after, I got an anonymous email dragging me for it.
I laughed at first. Then I spiraled.
Because that email hit every raw nerve I had:
- Who do you think you are?
- You’re already too expensive.
- You should feel lucky to be doing this work.
And the truth? I did feel lucky. Lucky to have clients. Lucky to be booked out. Lucky that people even wanted to sit in my chair.
So how dare I ask for more, right?
But here’s what I didn’t realize at the time: I was carrying around this belief that being “just a hairstylist” meant I wasn’t allowed to run a real business—definitely not one where I got paid well, took breaks, or enforced boundaries.
Instead, I said yes to everyone. Even when I didn’t want to. Even when I was sick. Even when I was sobbing in the staff bathroom between clients.
Someone would ask, “Can you squeeze me in?” And I’d smile and say, “Of course!”
But inside? I was screaming.
Not at them—at me.
Because deep down, I knew I wasn’t being kind. I was being a coward.
And somewhere along the way, I confused self-sacrifice with good customer service. I thought:
- Being booked out = being successful.
- Never taking a day off = being in demand.
- Skipping lunch and squeezing clients in = being a good business owner.
But all that people-pleasing? It didn’t make me more successful. It just made me resentful. And eventually… totally burnt out.
I didn’t know how to run a business without sacrificing myself. And I thought raising my prices or enforcing boundaries would ruin everything.
(Plot twist: it didn’t. It saved everything.)
Clients don’t stay because you’re flexible. They stay because you’re confident, consistent, and clear.
And that $10 price increase? It was just the beginning of learning that.
Today, I teach other creative service providers how to do the same inside Rock Your Business. And let me be clear—this isn’t about becoming a cold, robotic business owner. You love your clients. I know that. I did too.
But you don’t have to destroy yourself to prove it.
