The 5 Myths About Being a Successful Service Provider

We’ve been told lies for a very long time about what it means to be successful and I’m here to tell you that none of it is true.

It’s frustrating to look back at the times I’ve fallen victim to these completely false narratives I was taught about my career.

For some reason, these myths get passed down because the older generation feels that the new one needs to “pay their dues”. And to be quite honest, it sucks that we had to go through things the way that we did.

So I’d like to give the next generation of service providers the gift of freedom and the reality that their success isn’t dictated by an outside source, success is how we feel on the inside.

So let’s bust some myths, shall we?

Myth #1: You have to work evenings and weekends

Now, I don’t want you to think that you shouldn’t or can’t work evenings and weekends. But I need you to know that it’s not a necessity in being successful.

By working evenings and weekends I was able to build my clientele when I was starting out, but if you know for sure that you’re going to stop working evenings and weekends because you’re creating a certain lifestyle, then you don’t have to work them.

I actually ended up getting busier when I stopped working evenings and weekends and was able to get more of the clients that I loved because I focused on attracting who I really wanted as my clients.

Evenings and weekends may be accommodating for some people, but it’s not required to be successful.

Yes, if you’re not working evenings and weekends it might take longer to build a clientele, or you may have to be more intentional about finding clients. But that’s not to say you won’t be successful this way.

Myth #2: Only big city, big-name stylists can charge premium prices

Look, I get it. I grew up in a small town thinking this too.

I remember in 2011 I had a client who was telling me about a haircut they got in New York that cost them $150. My response to her was that I would “never charge that much for a haircut – that’s ridiculous!” You know when they say never say never?

I had this weird mindset about dollar amounts. And I want you to get out of that mindset that your location affects what you can charge. It’s simply not true.

Your prices need to be based on your value, your experience, the experience that you give your clients, and the value that they see. This means that you need to communicate your value to them. I dive deeper into how to price your services inside of my online program Rock Your Business.

It’s important to remember that not everyone is going to pay the prices or understand your value. And that’s okay. Certain prices are not reserved for certain people.

Myth #3: You have to take on every client

I will caution you to tread lightly around how you communicate this. But, with that being said, you do not have to take on every person that’s interested in seeing you.

In my program, Rock Your Consultation, I go over how to create an application system to help weed out the wrong people and see if a client will be the right fit.

Because even if a potential client loves what you do and they really want what you have to give, if you see an answer to a question that doesn’t sit well with you and it doesn’t feel like they’ll be the right fit, you don’t have to take them on.

Too often we think we should be thankful for any client, and clients in return think that they’re “doing you a favor” by booking in with you. But remember, it’s harder to get rid of the wrong clients down the road than it is to just attract the right people from the start.

I, personally, would rather grow a clientele a little bit slower and more methodical and get the right people in than just to get fully booked up really fast with all the wrong people.

Myth #4: You have to accommodate every single request

Back in the day, when I first started out, you had to take on every single client and do every single service. That’s not really the case anymore and specializing in one service or niche is becoming a lot more common in our industry.

You don’t have to “pay your dues” to find success. And it’s okay if you don’t want to do every service.

Myth #5: This can’t be a wildly profitable career

How many times have you heard that you’re “just” a hairstylist? Or maybe someone has commented that it’s “cute” that you do hair. “What a great “hobby” to have?”

A lot of people don’t view us as professionals. But the thing is, we don’t always view ourselves as professionals either.

We need to show up professionally and we need to confidently claim “I can be profitable in this career”. That’s why I created Rock Your Business: Your Stress-Free Guide to Earning 6-Figures because I want you to get to that wildly profitable place without going through the stress that I did.

If you’ve ever believed one of these myths (I’ve been there), I’d like to invite you to get on the waitlist for Rock Your Business. It’s truly a life-changing program and community.

a disembodied hand with rose pink nails and a rose gold ring holds a fanned-out stack of dollar bills, the text overlay reads "earn 6-figures stress-free, rock your business, click here to get on the waitlist"

I want you to ask yourself: “What is success to me?”

Because when I asked myself that I realized that yes, I want to make a certain amount of money for the lifestyle I want to live, but I don’t want to get there by sacrificing my health, relationships or my time.

And that is why everything I do, every podcast I record, every YouTube video I film, every program I create, is all about removing the stress and taking the to-dos off your plate. Because friend, I want you to create a life, business and bank account that you love.

I hope you’re walking away starting to shift your mindset on what success looks like and specifically what it means to you.

You can do it the way you want to!
