embrace your super-power
Okay, I’m curious, how many times have you been told you’re “too lazy” and that you could never be successful?
So many people think that laziness and success can’t coexist, and I’m here to tell you it’s simply not true.
After this post, you’ll walk away knowing how to:
-
Quit glorifying the “hustle culture”
-
Make smarter decisions that save you time
-
Go at your own pace and why that’s so important
I’m on a mission to prove that you can be lazy AND successful. So let’s dive into…
The Truth About Laziness & Success
I recently spoke about some of the lies that we’ve been told about being beauty professionals and service providers, but what about the lies we tell ourselves?
One of the biggest lies I’ve ever heard (and told myself too) is that you can’t be lazy and successful.
And if I’m being honest, for a long time, I fully believed that lie. And it held me back.
I spent too much time in my life trying to be someone I wasn’t. Trying to “hustle” to the top, only deeming myself worthy if I was “working myself to the bone”. I was so busy and my ego loved it.
But it wasn’t sustainable. By pushing myself to the extreme I landed myself in a hospital bed with a stress-induced panic attack.
My whole life I’ve been told that I’m “lazy” and it was always said with negative connotations. Embracing my ADHD and neurodivergency has opened my eyes to viewing “laziness” in a new way. What if I told you that being lazy can actually help you succeed?
Yup! You heard that right. I’m here to prove to the world that you can be lazy and still be super successful (because, let’s be honest, success has a different definition for each of us, right?).
It’s time to stop fighting your laziness. It’s time to embrace it as your superpower, friend.
Your Secret Weapon
I know it sounds like I’m trying to be cute, but I’m 100% serious when I say that laziness can be your superpower.
I’ll give you an example: I used to think I absolutely sucked at cleaning my house and that because of that, I should just never do it. But that mentality can really hold us back in so many places.
I’m not consistent in many things. In fact, I often say the only thing I’m consistent with is being inconsistent. But it’s okay to not be at 100% every single day.
I’d like you to take a moment to think about all the areas that you feel “lazy” in. Write them down on a piece of paper and then ask yourself how you can use it to your advantage.
If I’m being honest, my laziness is the most efficient thing about myself. I will do anything in my power to get things done in the quickest, most streamlined way possible. My laziness helps me define the most direct route from point A to point B (even if it might seem a little indirect to someone else).
Shifting Your Mindset
How many times have you beaten yourself up because your brain works differently? As creatives, we often view the world in a different way and end up doing things against the grain, or differently, or simply not as fast as others and we’re more likely to procrastinate.
The irony? Despite countless words of caution that we’re not doing it “correctly”, it ends up working better for us in the end.
Did you know that it’s actually been scientifically proven that people who procrastinate actually come up with better solutions? Score one for the lazy peeps! When we procrastinate, we’re actually giving our brains more time to look at the situation from all angles.
On the other hand, I also know that if I’m given too much freedom I will take as much time as I can to do things. Having a due date or a time urgency helps me actually complete those tasks.
I want you to realize that the perspective you have of yourself and your “imperfect” characteristics might actually be your superpower.
More Than Enough
I know those yucky feelings that come up when we’re told that we’re “lazy” or that we could “never be successful” because of it. And I’m here to remind you that that’s total BS. You are not behind, you are not inept and you are certainly not useless.
That laziness? It’s actually your strength.
We’ve been taught that we have to “do more” or “be more” in order to find true success, especially as service providers. But there are many ways to grow your business and your revenue without doing more. You can find your own path to success.
I want to encourage you to build a business that doesn’t require you to “hustle” to be successful.
Stop being so hard on yourself. I know you are a qualified, kick-a$$ professional and you are allowed to be successful (whatever that definition is for you).
I’m giving you permission to sleep in that extra hour, to take that vacation you’ve been dreaming of, to not clean your house, to do what feels right for you, even if others may view it as “lazy”.
Embrace your laziness as a superpower and stop trying to wish it away. Will you join me in ditching the glorification of the hustle?
We’ve learned, over the past couple of years, that we can’t keep going the way we used to. So why not shift in a way that serves you better? Work should fund your life, not run your life.
You’re a big deal and you can do hard things, friend. I hope this has helped to shift your perspective on laziness and you see that it’s not a bad thing. You deserve success just as much as the next guy.
