What to Say when a Client Upsets You

Aug 6, 2020

Business, Breakfast and Bedhead

As hairstylists, we have an intimate relationship with our clients. We learn their fears, their likes and dislikes, we hear about their work, their families and relationships. We develop close bonds and although that fills our hearts with joy, sometimes it can be overwhelming and you can feel spread too thin (am I a mind reader? No, I’ve just been there too!). Think about this…

I’ve got a treat for you today! In this episode, I’m talking with Holly Luby from Thunder Bay, Ontario. (Coolest town name ever.)

Holly is a Rock Your Business alumna, self-proclaimed control freak, and anxious creative. She’s been a stylist for 15 years, an educator for 8, and a business owner since February.

Yes, she started her salon business during the pandemic, and she’s succeeding! How is that even possible?!

I always prided myself on my excellent customer service.

I always made sure to “go the extra mile” with every one of my customers.

When I first went out on my own I totally thought I was killing it. The hustle was real and I took that as a win…

10 years ago I wouldn’t bat an eye at …

  • Working late…

  • Coming in early…

  • Going in on my days off…

All to accommodate a booking. Literally one single booking sometimes (too many times to count).

This episode is FIRE.

Today, I’m talking to Lindsay Skinn, a Rock Your Business alumnae and kickass stylist who takes implementation to a whole new level.

I’ve had several guests from small towns on the podcast lately, and the theme continues with Lindsay! She lives on a dirt road and her house doesn’t have WiFi (she called into this episode from her salon!) and she’s proof that you can totally be a successful stylist in a town where it’s normal to see a horse and buggy ambling down the road.

Have you ever made a snap-judgement of someone you barely knew? Maybe you had just met them, or maybe you simply saw them from across the road and you instantly decided how you felt about that person. (If you say no, you’re lying!)

Stylists often do the same thing with their clients and how much they’re willing to pay. I have SO been there. I would make assumptions about the size of my client’s wallet. I would base these judgements on what I assumed their financial situation was.

Did they…

  • Work part-time and go to school?

  • Run a successful business?

  • Work high up in corporate?

  • Have to take a leave of absence?

Have I got a treat for you today!

In this episode, I’m talking to Molly Gee, an incredible salon owner, serial entrepreneur, and mastermind member who has done some ah-mazing things in the beauty industry!

Molly lives and works in Madison, Mississippi and she’s got the cool Southern accent to go with it! Madison’s not a big town (I know, I looked it up), and is yet another podcast guest who proves that you can kick butt as a salon owner in a small town.
